PVCC hosts singer-songwriter John McCutcheon and new arts event

As part of its 2018-19 Fine Arts and Performance season, Piedmont Virginia Community College will host “Sound & Vision,” a day-long series of free visual and performing arts events, followed by a concert by singer-songwriter John McCutcheon on Saturday, April 27. Sound & Vision will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with McCutcheon’s performance starting at 7:30 p.m. Events will take place in the V. Earl Dickinson Building, located on the college’s Main Campus in Charlottesville.

Sound & Vision celebrates 20 years of Fine Arts and Performance programming at PVCC with a family-friendly day of arts. The program schedule includes a “Sew and Print Playshop” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in room 117, with print artist Fenella Belle and sculptor/costume designer Annie Temmink. Participants are invited to drop in and “choose a creative adventure” using sewing machines and a printing station along with materials such as recycled clothes, cardboard, paper, foam, ink and more.

Main Stage Theatre events will include the following:

•    11 a.m. – “PVCC Music Department Concert” featuring performances by faculty members and student musicians
•    1 p.m. – “PVCC Dance Club Showcase” with original choreography by student dancers
•    2 p.m. – “Improv with PVCC Theatre,” a series of scenes created in the moment

The Pie Guy food truck will be onsite offering sweet and savory Australian-style pies from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

The day will culminate with a concert on the Main Stage by a performer deemed “folk music’s Rustic Renaissance Man” by the Washington Post. John McCutcheon is known for his tuneful and earnest folk songs, his penchant for embellishing his concerts with storytelling, and his skills on a multitude of traditional instruments including the banjo, guitar, fiddle, autoharp, jaw harp and the rarely seen hammer dulcimer. McCutcheon’s performances have won praise around the globe and his recordings have garnered numerous honors including seven Grammy nominations.

General seating tickets to McCutcheon’s concert are $18 for adults and $15 for seniors and students. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.pvcc.edu/performingarts, by calling the PVCC Box Office at 434.961.5376 (major credit cards accepted), or by visiting Greenberry’s Coffee (Barracks Road Shopping Center) or the PVCC Cashier’s Office during normal business hours.
